Outpatient services
Children with all different medical and surgical conditions are seen in our children’s outpatient department. There are speciality clinics with visiting consultants from Sheffield and Leeds including:
Nurses in the department perform a pre-consultation assessment of children prior to being seen by the doctor.
An appointment system is in place and children are seen in order not time of arrival.

Who will see my child during the consultation?When a child attends clinic for a consultation, they may be seen by a paediatrician or paediatric registrar. If the appointment is for a specialist consultation i.e. orthopaedic, cardiology or surgical, these are undertaken by visiting consultants to the hospital.
For training purposes registrars, junior doctors and medical students spend time in the children’s outpatient department. They may be observing clinic consultations but can be involved in interviewing family members and examining children. This is to enhance their learning & development as future doctors. Occasionally nursing students may be present in the consultation room.

- Toys and games in each waiting area
- Separate waiting area for older children
- Toilet facilities
- Feeding and nappy changing areas plus a quiet area for breast-feeding
