Hospital services
Children and young people are cared for in a 27-bedded ward. We also see children in our assessment unit. The children’s ward takes inpatients and cares for children aged 0 to 16 years from a range of specialties that include:
We also have a high dependency cubicle on the ward and access to a further designated paediatric cubicle in the hospital’s intensive care unit, which is used to stabilise very poorly children. Children who require more specialised treatment are generally referred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital or Leeds.
The ward includes a zone that is identified for teenagers to use if they choose to do so.
The ward is staffed by experienced nurses all of whom are trained children’s nurses. All ward staff attend annual updates in fire, health and safety as well as paediatric resuscitation. Some of the nursing staff have also undertaken advance life support training.
We provide family centred care within a happy and informal atmosphere. There is a well used children’s playroom, not to mention a vast array of videos, DVDs and computer games! The unit actively encourages parents to stay and participate in their child’s care and facilities are provided for parents who wish to do this, including a chair bed by each patient bed or cot, shower room and toilet as well as a relaxing parent’s room.
Children’s Play TeamWe have a five-strong play team that specialises in making the experience of hospital as normal as possible for children.
Their job is to bridge the gap between hospital and home by introducing play and ways of interacting with the children and young people. With younger children, play and interaction helps to alleviate the stresses of coming into hospital, whilst for teenagers it might be that by talking with them is the best way to help.
